The 2018 J. Tillman Staff Award for Service to USC is presented to Harriet Servis for outstanding service to USC since her retirement in 2000. This award has special meaning for Harriet, as she worked for seven years with J. Tillman Hall when he was the Director of the Emeriti Center.

Harriet Servis is an exemplary Trojan who followed a career in the Emeriti Center office with years of volunteering in support of the Center, her fellow staff retirees and for the betterment of the campus community.

Harriet has been helpful to the Staff Retirement Association for many years in assisting with its various programs and currently serves as co-chair of the Program Committee. In this role she has creatively reached out to numerous USC units to arrange programs highlighting unique and interesting information about our University for the benefit of retirees.

Harriet’s experience as an employee during the early years of the Emeriti Center has made her an invaluable historian for the Center and for USC events in general. She organized a project, with Fred Dear, to review the many Emeriti Center scrapbooks to identify people and events in Emeriti Center photos throughout the years which will be scanned and transferred into an electronic archive.

In addition to volunteer activity at USC, Harriet is active in her community. She has organized presentations by USC faculty at the Palos Verdes library, and is involved with the Village Project on the Peninsula, among other activities. Harriet’s husband, Ken Servis, a retired USC faculty member and administrator, often helps her with her USC and other volunteer efforts. We are fortunate to have them as Emeriti volunteers!
