On March 3rd, 2023, Professor Emeritus Arnold Platzker sat down with the RFA over Zoom to give his Intellectual Journey. It was a fascinating discussion detailing Dr. Platzker’s journey from a young boy with polio to a leader in the world of respiratory health care.

Dr. Platzker attended Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his assistant residency at Boston City Hospital for the Department of Pediatrics. This was followed by completing his Senior and Chief Residencies at Stanford University’s Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Platzker came to USC in 1974 as an Associate Professor Pediatrics, and was Professor of Pediatrics at Keck School of Medicine from 1985 to 2012. In 2013, he became Professor Emeritus. Dr. Platzker has been involved as a member of numerous national and international professional societies including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the European Respiratory Society. He has supervised postdoctoral fellows from UCSF and CHLA. His research interests include childhood asthma, inflammatory markers, environmental tobacco smoke exposure, as well as lung development in newborns. Dr. Platzker was also the Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).
