learners of all backgrounds. A renowned scholar in educational psychology and literacy
development, he has profoundly transformed how educators support English learners and
students living in at-risk environments. He pours his conscience and his care into his work, as his
research on sociocultural and motivational learning processes continues to drive the development
of instructional practices nationwide.
Professor Rueda has served our USC community with distinction for nearly 40 years. Through
his leadership at the Rossier School, he has championed innovative programs that seamlessly
integrate research with classroom practice, all while bolstering access in education. His
influential work on the relationship between sociocultural contexts and student engagement
continues to have a lasting impact on the field.
In addition to his scholarship, Professor Rueda is widely recognized as an esteemed mentor and
advocate. He has guided countless students and early-career faculty, nurturing a new generation
of educators deeply committed to strengthening our scholarly institutions. His outreach also

this, he has been recognized with numerous honors, including his election to the National
